  • The app has been rewritten from scratch in Unity—a more robust game development toolkit—and benefits from steady upgrades that were never possible on our previous outdated system. These fixes should solve most of the issues with the app, but this means there will be no new features for a while.

  • We can't stress this enough: everything that worked before still works. The announcement button and its accompanying filters work and are fully functional. But now we need to fix the thousands of bugs we've found in our method of doing things. As a result, there won't be any new features for at least another six weeks or so, as we make sure the new codebase is stable and secure.

  • All of the changes you've grown to love have been rewritten and vastly improved. For example, the FAB (that little blue button in the corner) can now be tapped repeatedly to bring up a full menu of customization options. This broke about a month ago, but is back and better than ever.

  • If you were using the old version for an extended period of time, your settings will still be preserved. Also, bugs in the new codebase are likely to manifest and rear their ugly heads, so we encourage everyone to report them! As a result, we're also holding off on running new tests that involve Yik Yak or its functionality. For now, we're focusing on stability and performance.

YikYak: A quick and easy way to chat on the go. You have a smartphone, but come up with a clever ;) nickname for yourself. You open the app, choose to start a new "yak" of your own or "reply" to someone else's, and you're off! You use your phone to type your message on the chat board, and then it becomes available for everyone in a 5-mile radius.

YikYak! It's a way to anonymously chat with strangers around you.

It sounds dangerous, but this social media app is surprisingly safe. It requires you to set up a 4-digit password to protect your account; this prevents hackers from logging on and deleting your posts. You can't become "verified" on the app unless you have already verified your account with Facebook and Twitter.

Sometimes, when an anonymous app like this becomes popular, people use it to bully others or send hateful messages, but YikYak has an alert system that allows others to report inappropriate posts. When an issue arises, the app's administrators will take action immediately.

how did yik yak work?

how does yik yak work:

Yik Yak, a social media app that has taken over college campuses in the United States and Canada, allows users to post anonymous messages of up to 10 seconds, with photos and GPS coordinates. The app's popularity has led to controversy on how appropriate it is for students, as some might say it promotes cyberbullying. However, its growing popularity can also be attributed to the platform's ability for users to see what the opinions of their fellow peers are and how they feel about certain topics in their location. Yik Yak provides an opportunity for public discussion and allows users to voice their opinions in a safe environment, without fear of being recognized by others.

Yik Yak was created in 2013 by two Furman University students through the app's development company, Yik Yak Inc. Tyler Droll, the company's co-founder and CEO, drew inspiration from his own experiences as a college student. Droll wanted to create an app that allowed students to feel free to express their opinions about campus issues and connect with other students who have similar interests.

Yik Yak has a five star rating on the Apple App Store and Google Play, which is uncommon for an app outside of the gaming category. The app's popularity has led to its rapid spread across campuses.

Since its launch, Yik Yak has been a controversial topic among college students, and many schools have tried to create policies regarding its usage on campus.

Yik Yak can be used on any college campus, even if the school does not officially have its own app. Through its GPS map, users are able to see posts from students currently on their campus and nearby schools. The app also allows users to view 'hundreds' of posts even if they are not on a campus within the Yik Yak radius, as many other college students post about their experiences at their home schools.

why did yik yak get shut down?

best of yik yak:

Yik Yak was built for people to anonymously say what they’re thinking, but unfortunately it also served as a vehicle for hateful speech. As the company grew, we saw no improvement—in fact, things seemed to get worse with users continuing to use Yik Yak to bully others. It was time for us, as a company and as individuals that make up this community, to take action.

We killed the app in order to focus on fixing the things that matter most.

Yik Yak was a question that divided people. It didn’t have to be like that, and we can find a way to honor its legacy by finding new ways of expressing ourselves. We hope this action sends a message of acceptance, both to the users that found Yik Yak to be an important place for them, and to those who have been hurt or inspired by this tool.

Here are some things that matter:

- We believe in the power of community. Creating a healthy community online is a huge priority for us and we hope to learn and improve from this experience.

- We want to show the world we still value one another, especially at times like this, when everything feels so hateful.

- We intend on continuing to grow our team with people of various backgrounds, identities, sexual orientations, gender identities and ages. This led to some people being worried about reporting hate speech on Yik Yak. We think anyone should feel comfortable reporting content on Yik Yak.

- We will continue to make Yik Yak the best place online for people to go when they want to be heard.

We hope we can earn your trust back, and we look forward to working with you all again.
