The world's richest man and his wife, MacKenzie Bezos, are divorcing after 25 years of marriage.

The Amazon CEO and his wife will remain business partners through their shared ownership of the Washington Post and Blue Origin space venture, as well as several other private ventures and investments. Jeff Bezos founded Amazon in 1994 and was also the first person to enter into the $100 billion club by virtue of the company's value.

Why did they choose to get divorced?

Rumors are swirling as to why MacKenzie and Jeff chose to end their 25-year marriage. Some believe they were on different pages with parenting or that a prenuptial agreement had provisions in place for Mackenzie to receive a larger chunk of Amazon stock upon divorce. Others have speculated that Bezos was having an affair with former Good Day Sacramento anchor, Lauren Sanchez, who he started dating shortly after his separation from Mackenzie.

The math behind their divorce settlement

MacKenzie Bezos is walking away from her marriage to Amazon founder Jeff Bezos with a $36 billion stake in his company. The rest of their assets will be divided up via inventive mechanisms: although they’re keeping their stock, any time either of them sells a share, they have to give half of any proceeds to their former spouse.

What do we learn from this experience?

I think we can learn a lot from MacKenzie. She said that while they were dating, she was worried about what would happen if they got married and had children. Since she would take on some of his shareholding, there was no way to know what kind of income or wealth she’d have in her own right. I think it’s important to remember that you don’t have to be rich or famous to start investing and building your net worth.

How will this affect Amazon?

The divorce settlement calls for MacKenzie Bezos to retain 25% of Jeff Bezos’s Amazon shares, which means she will remain one of its largest shareholders. The couple is also donating $2 billion to charity over time, which could potentially create more problems for Warren Buffett and Bill Gates’ Giving Pledge. The two were meant to donate a majority of their wealth over time, but now it looks like it might come sooner rather than later. And then there’s Amazon stock.

How does this affect his role at Amazon?

This divorce doesn't seem to be impacting his role at Amazon. He’s still listed as CEO of Amazon and there are no signs that he is stepping down or giving up any duties. The world’s richest man, Jeff Bezos, made headlines earlier in January 2019 when it was announced that he and his wife of 25 years MacKenzie were getting a divorce.

Is this a good thing for the world?

Good news, everyone! MacKenzie Bezos, wife of Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, just became not only the world’s richest woman, but also one of its wealthiest people in general. MacKenzie and her now ex-husband have both made headlines as two of history’s biggest entrepreneurs, with their $137 billion net worth each making them a part of The 50 Richest People in America on Forbes’ 2018 list.
