With all the germs around us, it’s not surprising that we get sick from time to time. If you have strep throat, however, it can be difficult to decide what to eat, since your throat hurts when you swallow and your stomach feels queasy at the thought of food.

However, there are some foods that you should avoid eating with strep throat and others that are safe for your body. The key to eating well with strep throat is to give your body what it needs without aggravating your symptoms or worsening the infection in any way.


Do: Keep it light

When you have strep throat, the last thing you want is a heavy meal weighing you down. Stick to soups, salads, and other light fare that won't leave you feeling stuffed. If your stomach can handle it, foods like mashed potatoes are a good choice because they don't require any chewing which will only irritate your throat. Stay away from dairy and anything spicy or rich in flavor. 

  • Don't: Force yourself to eat: It's tempting when you're feeling queasy or hurting for food, but forcing yourself to eat when you have strep throat will only make things worse.
  • Rest assured that after awhile your appetite will return even if it takes time for the illness itself to pass. In the meantime, drink plenty of fluids such as water, soup broth, and ginger ale to help keep hydrated. And remember that there are other ways to get your daily nutrients such as taking a multivitamin supplement.


Do: Stay hydrated

It's important to stay hydrated when you have strep throat. Drink plenty of fluids, like water, unsweetened tea, and clear broth. These will help thin out mucus and prevent dehydration.

  1. Don't: Eat irritants (five sentences): Spicy, acidic, or rough foods can irritate your sore throat and make it worse. You should avoid them while you're sick.
  2. Stay away from raw fruit and vegetables that may contain bacteria on the surface that could aggravate your throat. Sugary treats are best left alone because sugar is a dry ingredient that won't do anything for your throat. And don't eat any dairy products if you know you have lactose intolerance. They'll only give you an upset stomach and diarrhea.


Don’t: Drink alcohol

Alcohol will only dehydrate you further and can interact negatively with your medications. Plus, it’ll probably make your throat feel even worse. Drink lots of fluids to stay hydrated: It'll keep the mucus thinner and help ease any pain from a sore throat. Drink warm liquids instead of cold ones: Cold water may cause discomfort when you have a sore throat because the liquid pools in your mouth or down the back of your throat, which could aggravate your inflamed tissues. Eat foods that are moist like soup, mashed potatoes, soft breads, applesauce and cooked oatmeal. Use saltines as needed for comfort.


Don’t: Stress about food

It’s normal to lose your appetite when you’re sick, so don’t worry if you don’t feel like eating. And if you can only stomach certain foods, that’s OK too. Yes, there are some food items to avoid because they may irritate your throat or make it worse, but the best rule is not to stress about it. Eat what makes you happy! Soup and crackers? Soup, toast, water? Ice cream sundae? All are perfectly acceptable ways to nourish yourself while you're feeling under the weather. The key here is listening to your body and giving in to what feels right for you. If soup doesn't sound appetizing, go for toast instead - either way will do.


Remember, it only lasts about a week!
